What to Wear When Paddle Boarding

Whether you have a used ISUP (Inflatable Stand-Up Paddleboard) or a brand-new rigid board, you can enjoy paddle boarding on virtually any day of the year. However, preparing for a day of paddle boarding in the summer requires a different approach than gearing up for a winter session.

Here’s how to adapt your paddle boarding gear to stay comfortable year-round, from the coldest winter periods to the most scorching summer days.

The Essentials You Should Have All Year

Regardless of the outdoor temperature or where you go paddle boarding, the most important paddle board accessories are appropriate safety equipment. All paddle boarders should wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD), also called a life jacket.

Genuine PFDs sold in the United States are tested and approved by the United States Coast Guard (USCG). Look for the “USCG Approved” tag on the label or product information.

There are five PFD categories, from Type I to Type V. Each has a different design that provides different levels of safety for various environments.

  • Type I: Heavy life jackets designed for offshore use in rough waters
  • Type II: Medium life jackets intended for offshore or near-shore use in calmer waters
  • Type III: Lightweight, general-purpose life jackets for the beach or near-shore use.
  • Type IV: Non-wearable flotation devices, such as rings and cushions
  • Type V: Special-purpose devices

For paddle boarders, the best choice is a Type III PFD. These wearable jacket-like devices offer the right balance of weight, comfort, and safety in emergencies. Type III PFDs are also the most commonly available and are typically affordable. While heavier Type I or II may offer higher buoyancy, they are bulky and uncomfortable for paddle boarding.

What to Wear on Hot Days

Whether you are near the beach, a lake or a river, bringing your inflatable paddle board is a fun way to enjoy a summer break or a warm weekend. Fortunately, gearing up for paddle boarding on a hot day is fairly easy.

Paddle boarding can be enjoyed as a “dry” water sport, meaning it is possible to go paddling fully clothed without going into the water. However, it might not be the most comfortable experience during hot summer days. Here’s what we recommend for a safe, fun paddle boarding experience:

Swimming Gear

Bring your swim gear, such as a swimsuit or swim trunks, so you can jump in the water and cool off from the warm sun at any time.

Rash Guard and Board Shorts

If you plan to stay on the board for long periods, a rash guard will protect your body from the sun’s UV rays as well as chafing and abrasions. Pair it with board shorts and stay barefoot to maximize your freedom of movement and ensure your feet grip the board.

Sun Protection Accessories

Even if you wear a rash guard, being on an inflatable stand up paddle board without appropriate protection can result in a nasty sunburn. Bring SPF50 sunscreen for your exposed skin and wear a sun hat and sunglasses.

What to Wear in Cold Conditions

Paddle boarding isn’t just a summer activity. You can enjoy your board and the water at any time, including the winter months. However, preparing for a paddle boarding day when it’s cold requires a little more preparation.

Your regular swimsuit and rash guards won’t cut it; you need appropriate protection in case you fall into cold water.

Neoprene Shoes or Boots

While summer paddle boarding is best enjoyed barefoot, you should prioritize protecting your feet from the elements on cold days. Neoprene boots come in various sizes and thicknesses; the taller the sole and the thicker the boot, the more protection they offer from the cold. Ensure the soles have anti-slip properties so you can safely remain on the board.

Neoprene Gloves

Neoprene gloves of appropriate thickness can keep your hands warm and comfortable while paddling and protect them from frostbite. Like boots, choose the right glove thickness for the water temperature so you have proper insulation.

Do I Need a Drysuit or Wetsuit?

Any type of full-body insulating suit can keep your body warm and comfortable while paddle boarding. Whether to choose a drysuit or a wetsuit depends on your local conditions.

Wetsuits

Wetsuits are primarily designed to keep you warm when in the water. They are thinner and lighter, offering better mobility, but they may not be the best choice for keeping warm in cold or freezing water.

Drysuits

A drysuit fully seals your body from the water with extra insulating layers, keeping you as dry as possible even underwater. While they offer the best insulation, they should only be used in the coldest conditions; you might find it uncomfortable or overheat if it isn’t cold enough.
